I’ve been a doula for 12 years. I’ve attended and supported many births, and these days, there aren’t many “firsts” for me. But recently, I had the honor of experiencing something truly unforgettable — a powerful moment that reminded me why I do this work.
After meeting Sierra, I knew immediately she was a strong and resilient mama. She had the courage to leave her abusive husband while pregnant with their third baby. She shared her story on Facebook, seeking support, and thanks to our incredible community, we were able to connect. Some of you even donated to her baby registry or brought items to our picnic and baby item swap. (Thank you for showing up for her!)
Sierra was completely in tune with her body and her baby, Milo. She trusted herself, and I trusted her. She chose to labor freely at home, unassisted. My role was to be nearby, ready to comfort or support her as needed, while also giving her the space to move and change positions on her own terms.
With each breath and prayer, she brought Milo closer to this world. When it was time, she instinctively moved into a forward-bent squat. I sat quietly behind her, ready. And then — with such grace and strength — she brought Milo into the world. I was honored to be there to “catch” him and place him on her chest for skin-to-skin.
It was simply amazing. A first I’ll never forget — and a memory I will always cherish.
