Q: What is a birth doula?

A doula is a sacred companion on the journey into motherhood — a steady, nurturing presence who offers emotional support, gentle comfort, informed guidance, and unwavering advocacy. Her purpose is not to direct your birth, but to hold space for it — to protect the atmosphere, honor your intuition, and support you in having a birth that feels safe, powerful, and deeply aligned. What does that truly look like? It’s often hard to put the essence of a doula into words, because her value lives in the subtle moments of the birthing day. It’s the intuitive knowing of when to speak and when to be silent. The loving whisper of encouragement when doubt creeps in. The cool sip of water placed in your hand. The grounding touch on your back. The gentle suggestion to shift positions as your body opens and unfolds. A doula moves with the rhythm of your labor — attuned to your energy, your breath, your changing needs. She honors birth as both physiological and sacred, tending not just to your body, but to your spirit. You may experience your doula as a guide, a protector of your space, a wise mothering presence, an educator, or a grounding anchor in the waves of labor. Whatever form that support takes, she is there for you and you alone — devoted to your vision, your voice, and your unfolding. Together, we will uncover what kind of support feels most nourishing to you, so that on your birthing day, you feel seen, held, and empowered in every way..

Q: What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula is a support for the whole family in the immediate postpartum, so the mother may rest and recover from the birth.
There are overnight postpartum doulas and daytime postpartum doulas. Overnight doulas are also newborn care specialists that help you get rest and care for your baby, all while sharing tools and techniques to help you learn. Daytime postpartum doulas support you and your baby, that can look like;

  • Newborn care and education
  • Feeding
  • Meal prep
  • Tidying up and light cleaning
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Network of referrals and resources
  • Babywearing support
  • Emotional support

For more nourishing and mother focused postpartum care, we provide ancestral healing techniques, massage, bellibinding, sitz baths, Ayurvedic foods and teas and closing of the bones ceremonies.
supporting mom physically and emotionally.

Q: When is the best time to hire a doula?

Yesterday, lol! But really, the sooner the better. We can help you navigate your pregnancy. From the beginning, with the best prenatal vitamins, help you find an aligned provider for your birth, help you research where to birth, help you with your nutrition and movement for a healthy pregnancy journey and avoid any stumbling blocks on the road. We can help with baby registry essentials and what is worth it and what is not. We are like your wedding coordinator but for your birth, a concierge, a consultant, a sherpa, a guide. We got you through the whole process.

Q: What is the difference between a midwife and a doula?

A midwife is your medical provider, trained and licensed to attend births, like a Dr they can perform medical tasks, vital checks ect. A Certified Nurse Midwife can help deliver babies in the hospital and out of the hospital. A Licensed Midwife or a Certified Professional Midwife can help deliver babies at home and at birth centers. Midwives are trained in physiological births and specialize in that. They can perform almost everything an OB can minus cesarean section, use of a vacuum and episiotomies.

Q: Do doulas only do home births?

No actually, we go to more hospital births than any other location. We can help you birth wherever you choose, home, hospital or a birth center.

Q: When does a doula join a woman in labor?

We generally ask that you call at the first hint of labor and stay in close contact throughout that period until you are ready for the doula to join. It is different for everyone but we recommend that a doula join you when you have noticed the shift into active labor. We also don’t want to inadvertently scare away your progress when it’s most sensitive in the early hours. That is the time to spend with your partner, relaxing and getting the oxytocin going. The doula will however be in contact, give advice, offer tips and suggestions virtually with guidance and support before their physical arrival. Sometimes we come to your home first and sometimes we meet at the hospital/birth center, it just depends on the progress of labor and the support you need.

Q: What if my doula can not attend my birth, due to being at another birth, or sick, or out of town?

That is why we have Lotus Doula Tribe, we work as a tribe so that way there is always someone to support you. You may or may not have met them before, generally you have as we try to introduce our moms to different doulas in the consult calls and the prenatals. But if not, then we will do a facetime or in person intro, and the partner doula will have your file and all the notes so they are up to date and briefed on what you want, they will also have a copy of your birth plan.

Q: Does having a doula diminish my partner’s role?

NO! The doula is not only there for mom, but there for the partner as well. The partner knows the mom and the doula knows the birth, so their relationship is a collaboration in supporting mom in the best way. AND, the doula is there to normalize birth and offer support to the partner in times of stress. A lot of partners find this refreshing, it all doesn’t fall on their shoulders. They don’t have to make all the big decisions or know exactly what to do or say. They can focus on mom and support her.

Q: Can the postpartum doula babysit?

Maybe! Many have boundaries around babysitting the newborn or older children. Some are happy to do this occasionally, while others do not include this in their service. This is a great question for the interview.

Q: I want a night doula. Will they stay awake all night?

Probably not. Many overnight doulas require a place for them to rest or sleep and will wake to support nighttime feeds and getting baby back to sleep. There may be some time dedicated to supportive tasks for the family, but if you want “awake care” you will need to request that, and it’s usually a higher price tag. Daytime doulas tend to do more household tasks if this is important to you.

About Us

Hilda Anderson Erickson

This is Mary, the founder of Lotus Doula Tribe, with her son Beau and the statue behind them is the women behind Lotus Doula Tribe, Hilda Anderson Erickson. She was Marys great great Aunt. She immigrated to America from Sweden when she was 7 and made her way West as a Pioneer. After having her 2 kids she became a midwife and helped support thousands of the Goshute Natives in Northwestern Utah. She would ride her horse side saddle to births up to 25 miles away. Hence why they have her statute that way. She lived to be 109 years old, the oldest living Pioneer. Mary recently made the trip to visit her statue that the town of Grantsville erected for her. She was a beacon of light for this City. Every year they dedicate October 12th to her, and the whole city celebrates her. She was an incredible women of service, she has passed that quality down the line to Marys Grandma and Mother, both women who volunteer and serve women in many capacities.

Exploring Life & Business with Mary Skinner of Lotus Doula Tribe

Mary’s journey into birth work began with deep family roots. Her great-great Aunt Hilda, a Swedish midwife for the Paiute Indian Tribe, and her mother, who birthed all five of her children at home, inspired a lifelong passion for supporting mothers. After attending a friend’s birth and completing training as both a doula and yoga instructor, Mary found her calling. She now combines yoga’s breathing techniques, meditation, and bodywork with labor support to help mothers embrace the strength and beauty within themselves. Continue Reading!
